Cartoons have helped me hugely over the years

  • as visual metaphors
  • to explain new or difficult ideas.

They are nearly all the work of Stephen Stanley of Whyalla, South Australia. He owns the copyright, and should be asked about using them by emailing him at

(You will have to type out this email address, which is a graphic to prevent automatic spamming)

The hundreds of cartoons he has drawn for me have fallen into these groups:
Ergonomics applied to surgery
Care of surgical instrument
Repetition strain injury
Ergonomic in China

In time I hope to add many of them I have used in lectures to this website but you will see some of his work in the papers here.

He has done series of technical cartoons for a number of academic friends, on topics including anaesthetic equipment and blood transfusion.
